if 절의 도치: if절에서 주어 다음에 should, were, had pp구조의 동사가 오면 접속사 if생략하고 의문문 구조로 도치 가능

if+S+should+VR=should+S+VR

if+S+were=were+S

if+S+had pp=had S pp

ex) I would quit were I you.

Had I but known that he was there, I would have shut the mouth.

Should there be one more complaint from customers, I would definitely fire all of you.

wish가정법

뒤에서 절을 받을 때 가능성이 있는 사실을 받지 않고 반대사실을 받아서 유감을 표명함. would that/if only/would rather사용 가능

ex) I wish I were an adult. = I'm sorry I'm not an adult.

I wished I had a laptop. = I was sorry I didn't have a laptop.

I wished I had taken more pictures on the trip. = I was sorry I had not taken more pictures on the trip.

as if(as though)가정법: 마치 -하듯이, 했듯이로 해석. 반대사실을 양태적으로 연결시킬 수 있고 가능성 있는 사실을 연결시킬 수 있음. 문맥과 시제, 시점을 잘 연결해야 함. 

ex) She tells me to do this and that as if she were my mother.

The woman greeted Mike as if she knew him.

Everybody behaves as if nothing had happened.

He shook his head as if to say no.

It's time+가정법 과거시제(should 쓰기도 함): 동사의 과거시제 쓰지만 시점은 과거 아님. 진작 했어야 하는데 하지 않고 있다 라는 뜻.

ex) It's time we finished up this work. = It's time we should finish up this work.
