Omar's army had been victorious over the Persian

forces. The defeated general was taken prisoner and

sentenced to death. At the final moment , he asked

for a cup of wine. It was brought to him. seeing that

he hesitated to raise it to his lips , omar assured

him that neither was the wine poisoned , nor there

was anyone who would kill him while he drank.

Omar added that he gave his word as a prince that

his captive's life would be safe until he finished

drinking the last drop of the wine.
