1.Philip was a good listener;though he often thought of clever things to say,It was seldom till after the opportunity to say them had passed.but Hayward was communicative;anyone more experienced than Philip might have thought he liked to hear himself talk.

다른건 구조상 이해가 가능한데요.첫번째 밑줄친 부분은 어떤 구조인가요?

1. it is not until 이라는 구조를 이해해야 하는데 이것의 생성원리는 좀 길고 제 강의 영어의 정도에서 다루고 있습니다 거기를 참조해야 하는데 결론을 말씀드리면 it is not ( seldom 등 부정어 ) until(till) ㅡ다음에 after 절이나 그냥 절 혹은 특정 시점 명사를 달면 해석이 [ --가 되어서야 비로소 이루어지다, --후에서야 비로소 이루어지다 ] 입니다 그래서 [ 그것들을 말할 기회가 지나가버리고 난 다음에서야 비로소 말할 총명한 사실들을 종종 생각해냈다 ] 이런 의미입니다
옆에 잇으면 더 자세히 설명해줄 텐데 아쉽구요
2. well 등의 부사는 뒤에서 나오는 절을 의문문의 구조로 도치시켜서 쓰는 것이 일반적 어법입니다. 발음과도 관계되어 있구요
