He had heard that when he preached elsewhere he always delivered his sermons without preparation. Stillingfleet explained that awe of the king made him afreaid of forgetting what he had to say, so he preferred to read when he had the royal family in the audience. Encouraged by the King's favorable reaction to this polite reply, the bishop then asked if he might put a question of his won. Why, he asked Charles, did he always read his speeches to the House of commons, when it could not be that he was in awe of his audience(그가 청중에 대한 경외심을 가진다는것이 있을수 없음에도)? Charles replied kindly, "I have asked them so often, and for so much money, that I am ashamed to look them in the face." 밑줄친 문장의 구조가 너무 어렵습니다....일단 접속사로 사용된 when에 무슨 뜻이 있어서 저렇게 해석이 되는지 궁금하고, it could not be that~구조는 또 어떻게 생기게된 원리인지 정말 답답합니다 ㅠㅠ 내용을 적어주실때 설정된 폰트크기 그대로 사용 부탁드립니다! |

when 절은 시간의 부사절입니다. when 절은 시점이 겹친다는 것만을 의미하지 그것이 반드시 인과 관계나 조화관계를 담보하는 것은 아닙니다. 그래서 역접이나 양보적 시간의 겹침도 전달할 수 있습니다. 물론 even when 이라고 써주면 의미가 더 확실해 지겠지만 그렇게 굳이 하지 않아도 문맥으로 파악합니다. it 은 상황주어 입니다 that 절은 be 동사의 보어절입니다. [상황이 댓 이하일수 없었을 때- 즉 그가 자신의 청중의 경외감속에 있었다 라는 상황이 될 수 없었을 때 - 의역하면 그의 청중들이 그를 경외스럽게 대할 수 없었을 때 (조차) 왜 그는 늘 하원에서 자신의 연설문 원고를 읽었는지 ] it is that 절 구조에서 it ㅡ은 말하는 상황을 의미하는 상황주어 입니다.
