영어에서 명사는 한국어와 달리 셀 수 있는 개념인가 아니면 셀 수 없는 개념인가를 매우 중시하며 이에 따라 많은 용법이 달라질 수 있으니 처음부터 명사란 곧 수와 직결된 것이라고 생각해야 한다.

전치수식어 + 명사 + 후치수식어

한 소녀 : a girl

아름다운 한 소녀 : a beautiful girl

우리 교실에 있는 아름다운 한 소녀 : a beautiful girl who is in our class

전치수식어 : 관사, 소유격, 지시형용사, 부정형용사, 수사

후치수식어 : 명사형 수식어, 동사형 수식어, 절형 수식어

셀수 있는 명사

단수와 복수가 있으며 정관사, 부정관사 및 가산관련 한정사나 형용사를 받을 수 있다.

a, an, one, this, that, each, every

two, three, these, those, a few, few, several, many, a number of, a couple of, a group of,

I have many books

I have much money

a money

the, 소유격,this, that은 가산명사와 불가산명사 앞에 붙일 수 있다.

a car(o) the car(o) the water(o)

my car(o) my cars(o) their car(o) their cars(o) my love(o) their love(o)

this car(o) this cars(x) this water(o)

these car(x) these cars(o) these water(x) these waters(o)

1.보통명사 : 개체화될수 있는 사람, 사물 ,개념 등

2.집합명사 : 집합체자체는 단수취급, 구성원들을 이야기 할때는 복수,

family,class,committe,group,jury,team,orchestra,audience,band,union

3.군집명사 : 항상 복수

(1) the police, the jury, the clergy,

(2) people, cattle, vermin, poultry

a police officer , two police officers/

people : 민족이라는 의미면 단수가산명사이다

a policeman (경찰관 한명)

셀수 없는 명사

1.추상명사 : 인간의 정신셰계를 규정

news,information,advice,peace,knowledge,luck,honesty,love,hatred,beauty,courage,anger,importance,convenience,truth,strength,

(1) a, an , one, two, every, many등으로 수식할 수 없다. 수량화할 때는 조수사를 이용한다.

(2) be + of 추상명사 = 형용사

of importance = important , of significance = significant ,

of account = important , of value = valuable

of use = useful , of service = serviceable

of interest = interesting , of help = helpful

of growth = growing of ability = able, of age = old

(3) 다른 전치사 + 추상명사 = 부사구가 많음

The train arrives on time

The train on time is preferred to taxies

with ease(쉽게), with ease(편하게), with caution(조심스럽게) = with care

on purpose(고의로), on demand[request](요구시에), in turn(다시) by accident(우연히), on time(정시에) in time(시간에 적절히 맞게), behind time(늦게)

(4) all + 추상명사 = 추상명사 + itself = very 형용사

all kindness = kindness itself = very kind

be all eyes : 집중해서 보고 있다

be all ears : 집중해서 듣고 있다.

be all smiles : 매우 행복하다

be all tears : 눈물에 젖어있다.

(5) have the 성질명사 + to부정 : 매우 ~하여 ~하다
