sing ( 명사형 ) : 신호, 기호, 조짐, 상징 

Let me get your autograph => 기념을 위한 서명은 다음과 같은 표현을 쓴다. 반면에 sign은 

법적인 증빙을 위한 용도인 경우 사용한다 

sing + 명사 : ~에 서명하다

ex) Please sign your name upon the back of the check 

    The oil painting has been signed with his name 

    He signed over the property to his brother 

sign + 명사 + to vr : '명사'에게 ~하라고 신호하다 

ex) The doorkeep signed the tramps to get out of the hotel

* doorkeeper 도 사용 가능

sign up : 서명하여 가입하다, 참가하다 = sign in  

sign in의 경우 '자동사' 와 '타동사' 의 용법이 둘 다 가능하다

ex) I will sign in ( 자동사 ) / Sign him in ) ( 타동사 ) 

signal : 신호, 신호하다 

ex) The siren was a signal for everyone to leave the building

    This announcement signalled a clear change of policy 

signify : 의미하다, 나타내다 

ex) The white belt signifies that he's an absolute beginner

spare : 용서하다, 봐주다, 절약하다, 나누어주다, 할당하다, 없이 지내다 

You are so helpful so i can't spare you 

Can you spare some time with me? 

I may meet you again if i am spared => 내가 나누어짐을 당하면 당신을 만날 수 있을 것이다 => 시간이 나면, 여유가 있으면 의 뜻

spare + io + do : io에게 do를 모면하게 하다 

ex) Can't you spare me a few minutes? / He set himself to spare his friend trouble 

spend => 뒤에 in 이 없으면 분사구문, 있으면 전치사의 목적어로 사용된다 

ex) She spends too much time (in) dressing herself 

speak a of b / speark to 등 수동태로 만들 떄 뒤에 붙은 전치사도 사용함에 주의할 것 

ex) She is somewhat rarely spoken to / Language is ofthen spoken of as a living organism 

stand (자동사) : 서다, 서서 존재하다, 현상을 유지하다 

stand + 명사 : 세우다, 견뎌내다 

ex) He stood me until late  

stand + io + do = io 에게 do를 한 턱 내다 => do는 식사, 술 ... 등이 올 수 있다 

stand a chance : 기회 나 가능성을 가지다 ex) It will stand a poor chance 

stand by : 도우다 ex) He always stood by fis friends in diificulty 

stand out : 탁월하다 => He stands out in dealing with heavy machinery 

stand up for : ~의 편이다 => I will stand up for such a man of honesty
